The brief was to communicate something about paper, I was interested in the Chinese paper called Joss Paper.

I created a poster communicating what Joss paper is and how the Chinese use this to connect to the spirit world by burning it. As well as the poster telling the story of Joss paper it also has symbolic animals, fruit and flowers along with their meanings.

“In Chinese culture Joss paper burning is a symbolic ceremony whereby people buy and burn joss paper items (such as paper houses, cars, clothing etc) to send to the afterlife or spirit world in order to provide for themselves in the next life. The Jade Emperor is the ruler and arbiter of all heavens including the afterlife and uses his powers to aid this journey”

The posters are hand illustrated and then screen printed onto coloured tissue paper they are packaged with a screen printed match book.

This was put into a paper exhibition at Staffordshire Univeristy.
